Course description

Receiving a notification of legal action is a stressful and confusing time for most healthcare professionals. Used to the world of medicine, physicians may feel out of their element as they’re forced into the legal system with little understanding of what to expect. In this presentation, A. Tony Taweel, JD, will review the litigation process in detail to educate medical professionals on their role in the proceedings. In addition, he will review how to best prepare for litigation and its potential impact, leaving learners with a better understanding of the process overall.

Learning objectives

At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Summarize the litigation process and the physician’s role during the legal proceedings
  • Identify the roles of key professionals during depositions, mediations and trials
  • Describe the impact of litigation on the medical professional

A. Tony Taweel, JDA. Tony Taweel, JD, received his JD from the University of Detroit - Mercy School of Law, and he earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics, with a minor in Finance, from the University of Michigan-Dearborn. He is a partner at Smith Haughey Rice and Roegge, focusing his practice primarily on the defense of hospitals, physicians, nurses, physician’s assistants, nursing homes, and other healthcare professionals involved in medical malpractice litigation. Mr. Taweel also assists healthcare professionals with licensing investigations and has successfully tried several administrative licensing matters. He has defended healthcare institutions and professionals for over 25 years.

Mr. Taweel concentrates on a detailed preparation of his cases, which allows his clients to make well informed risk decisions at trial or during early resolution efforts. He engages in an aggressive pre-trial motion practice, which has resulted in the dismissal of claims against his clients. Mr. Taweel has also successfully tried numerous malpractice cases to jury verdict.

Licensed to practice law in Michigan, Mr. Taweel is also licensed to practice in the United States District Court for the Eastern and Western District of Michigan. He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, Negligence Law Section, the Michigan Society of Healthcare Risk Management; he is also a Board Member of the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel and was invited to be a member of the Claims and Litigation Management Alliance. Mr. Taweel has been selected as one of Michigan's Super Lawyers® from 2013 to the present; and, in 2022 was also been listed in Best Lawyers and as a Leading Lawyer in Medical Malpractice Defense. 

Mr. Taweel has lectured on a variety of healthcare topics, including: Documentation Issues and Medical Charting; A Paralegal’s Guide to Medical Malpractice Cases; and Affidavits of Merit – The Truth and Only the Truth. He has further presented lectures on: Foreclosure and Repossession in Michigan; Current Developments in Fair Housing Law for Attorneys; and First Party Auto Property Damages Claims.
