Physicians’ Experiences with and Perceptions of Caring for Patients with Disability

Course description

Over 61 million Americans have disabilities and often experience inequities within the healthcare system. This discrepancy can be attributed, in part, to physicians who have inaccurate perceptions of people with disabilities. In this presentation, Dr. Lisa Iezzoni will describe the potential causes of medical-related disparities and barriers people with different disabilities often encounter. Dr. Iezzoni will also outline the major responsibilities of physicians under the Americans with Disabilities Act. This presentation will equip attendees with practical strategies for reducing obstacles and providing high-quality care to patients with disabilities.

At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe potential causes of healthcare disparities for people with disabilities
  • Identify major responsibilities of physicians under the Americans with Disabilities Act

Lisa I. Iezzoni, MD, MSc

Lisa I. Iezzoni, MD, MScLisa I. Iezzoni, MD, MSc, is a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School based at the Health Policy Research Center and the Mongan Institute at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Iezzoni has conducted numerous studies examining the healthcare experiences of persons with disability. Her book Making Their Days Happen: Paid Personal Assistance Services Supporting People with Disability Living in Their Homes and Communities was published in January 2022. During the 2022-23 academic year, she was the Sally Starling Seaver Fellow at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute. Dr. Iezzoni is a member of the National Academy of Medicine in the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.
