Tumultuous Past and Tenuous Future: Trends and Their Impact on Physicians

Course description

As the U.S. healthcare system attempts to recover from COVID, we are bombarded by questions and challenges: What will the “new normal” of the post- or perpetual-COVID healthcare landscape look like? What are the implications of the fact that in 2020, for the first time in history, the majority of employed physicians were employed by different kinds of corporations, including insurance companies, venture capital and private equity firms, pharmacy chains, retailers, and others? How do we help our workforce recover to attain sustainability while dealing with growing threats and violence in the workplace? These trends challenge physicians as never before. This presentation will examine the broad implications of the pandemic on physician practice and liability, and drill down to assess the issues and risks attendant to these trends.

At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the broad risk implications of the pandemic on physician practice and liability
  • Assess and adjust their response to these trends and risks
  • Apply strategic approaches to addressing these trends and challenges while minimizing their liability exposure

James E. Orlikoff is president of Orlikoff & Associates, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in healthcare governance and leadership, strategy, quality, organizational development, and risk management. He is the National Advisor on Governance and Leadership to the American Hospital Association.  He was named one of the 100 most powerful people in healthcare in the inaugural list by Modern Healthcare magazine.

Mr. Orlikoff has been involved in leadership, quality, and strategy issues for over 40 years.  He has consulted with health systems and governments in 12 countries, and since 1985 has worked with physician group, hospital, and system governing boards to strengthen their overall effectiveness and their oversight of strategy and quality.  He has worked extensively on developing effective governance and strategy for physician groups.  He has written 15 books and over 100 articles and has served on hospital, college, and civic boards. He currently is serves as the Chair of the Board of the St. Charles Health System in Bend, Oregon. He was the vice-chair of the board of Virginia Mason Health System in Seattle, Washington, and chaired their Governance Committee.
