Breast Cancer: What’s Special About a Diagnosis in Younger Women?

September 5, 2024

Course description

Historically, breast cancer has largely been a disease in older women. When breast cancer occurs in younger women it is not expected and often disrupts the normal young adult development of women who may be finishing their education, starting their professional careers, establishing relationships, or having a family. Typically, breast cancer screening does not occur until a patient is in their 40s, so the diagnosis in younger women is often delayed and may also be associated with larger and more aggressive cancers. This presentation will provide a better understanding of the multifaceted factors—medical, physical, psychosocial and financial—associated with a breast cancer diagnosis at a young age and the unique survivorship issues in this patient population.

Learning objectives

At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Summarize the epidemiology of breast cancer in women younger than 50
  • Explain the challenges in diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in women younger than 50
  • Identify common survivorship issues in this patient population
