Course Description

While recent provisional data showed a small decrease in the number of fatal drug overdoses in the US and in Illinois from 2017 to 2018, the opioid epidemic still rages on. Physicians are doing their part to safely work with patients, many with difficult cases of chronic and intractable pain, to decrease opioid prescriptions. But law enforcement also has an important role to play in reducing the risk of drug abuse. Do you know how the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is working with physicians to end the opioid crisis? How can you avoid law enforcement interaction when prescribing opioids?

Dennis Wichern, former DEA Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Division, will answer these questions and more in this on-demand course.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe DEA’s specific authorities and role in relation to controlled substances and the practice of medicine.
  • Articulate characteristics and red flags that are often seen in providers that result in license infractions or criminal charges.
  • Discuss practical strategies and tips to reduce opioid risk at your medical organization while complying with federal law.
  • List and describe the two required components of a valid prescription under both federal and Illinois law.
