Course Description

Although up to 900,000 people could be affected by deep vein thrombosis/ pulmonary emoblisms (DVT/PE) each year in the US, the precise number of people affected by DVT/PE is unknown. 10-30% of people with DVT/PE die within one month of diagnosis, and sudden death is the first symptom of PE in 25% of people. Estimates suggest that 60,000-100,000 Americans die of DVT/PE each year. One third of people with DVT/PE will have a recurrence within 10 years.

Given the danger of DVT/PE for patients, it is critical that physicians understand risk factors and how to assess them. Do you know what genetic factors increase the risk of DVT/PE? Join ISMS and Dr. Joseph A. Caprini, Senior Clinician Educator at University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, for a webinar that will help prepare you to assess your patients’ risk of DVT/PE, as well as appropriate prophylaxis for patients at risk of DVT/PE.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify venous thromboembolism risk factors.
  • Administer and score a DVT risk assessment.
  • Discuss when to use prophylaxis and what prophylaxis is appropriate based on risk assessment.
  • Describe venous thrombosis risk factor associated with family history.
