Acute Care of Patients with Opioid Withdrawal and Pain

Course description

Hospitals and other acute care settings provide critical access to engage patients with OUD treatment, yet less than 10% of patients discharged for an opioid overdose are treated with Narcan or buprenorphine. Learn about rapid induction protocols for buprenorphine and methadone, and how to manage acute pain or perioperative pain in patients with OUD.

Learning objectives

At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the nuances of buprenorphine induction in the age of fentanyl
  • Manage perioperative and acute pain in patients with OUD
  • List resources on implementing OUD treatment in the hospital or ED

Sophia Peng, MD, FASAM

Sophia Peng, MD, FASAMSophia Peng, MD FASAM, is Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and Psychiatry and Community Behavior Sciences at Rush University. She has been an academic hospitalist and specializes in the acute care of patients with Substance Use Disorder (SUD), having served as an addiction medicine consultant at the University of Colorado Hospital and at Rush University's Substance Use Intervention Team (SUIT).

Dr. Peng attended The Pennsylvania State University for medical school and trained at Emory University Internal Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Peng is a champion for improving SUD care through clinical program development, education, and health policy advocacy. She directs the Complex Pain and Addiction Medicine clinic at Rush Palliative Care department.

Dr. Peng also has received a grant from the Illinois Department of Human Services’ Substance Use Prevention and Recovery division to assist Chicago emergency departments to implement medication treatment for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD).

Dr. Peng is on the core faculty of Rush Internal Medicine Residency Program and is a Subject Matter Expert for Rush Interdisciplinary MOUD ECHO fellowship. Dr. Peng was a Leadership in Health Policy and Advocacy Program (LEAHP) fellow in 2022. She serves on the board of Illinois Society of Addiction Medicine and on the American Society of Addiction Medicine delegation to the AMA.
