Course description
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, information relating to medications used for treatment is rapidly changing. This presents significant risk for physicians and their patients as adding to a patient’s medication regimen can lead to adverse drug interactions and polypharmacy. Minimizing the risks associated with potential additions of medications is of utmost importance in providing safe patient care.
Join us as clinical pharmacists Heather Rozea Cooper, PharmD, BCPP, and Quratulain (Anna) Zulfiqar, PharmD, review ways to stay up-to-date on the most current guidance for treatment of COVID-19, common adverse effects and the risk management strategies that exist for commonly used COVID-19 treatments and supportive/alternative therapies.
Learning objectives
At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:
- List resources available for updated guidance on medications used for COVID-19 treatment
- Identify differences between theorized and evidence-based treatment modalities for COVID-19
- Summarize adverse events and monitoring parameters for medications and supporting therapies for COVID-19

Dr. Heather Cooper (left) is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). Dr. Cooper completed two years of residency training in the Veterans Affairs healthcare system with a focus in psychiatry, and is board certified in psychiatric pharmacy.
Dr. Quratulain (Anna) Zulfiqar (right) is a Clinical Pharmacist at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). She completed her pharmacy school at the University of Houston College of Pharmacy and her post graduate residency training at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) focusing in ambulatory care.
Dr. Cooper and Dr. Zulfiqar are currently the two research pharmacists working on a geriatric deprescribing study, funded by Blue Cross Blue Shield, for which Dr. Holly Holmes is the primary investigator.
