Managing Anxiety and Depression in Your Practice
Course description
One of the many facets of healthcare that the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted is just how intertwined one’s mental and physical health can be. When working with your patients, how often do you consider mental health as the cause of their symptoms? How do you go about determining a treatment plan that also includes care for their mental health? Maria Juarez-Reyes, MD, PhD, joins us to discuss the complex relationship between mental and physical health and how it can impact your diagnostic process, as well as best practices for caring for patients who may be struggling with their mental health.

Maria Juarez-Reyes, MD, PhD
Assistant Clinical Professor in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health, Department of Medicine at Stanford University
Maria Juarez-Reyes, MD, PhD, received her PhD in health psychology, MD, and internal medicine residency training from the University of California at San Francisco. Her focus during medical training was in behavioral medicine. Dr. Juarez-Reyes’ research has been in medication eligibility criteria effects in ethnic subgroups, tobacco cessation practices of community-based providers, breast cancer screening follow-up in Latinx women, Latinx adolescent reproductive behavior, and TB treatment in urban county jails. In 2010, she became board certified in integrative medicine through the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine. Dr. Juarez-Reyes is currently Assistant Clinical Professor in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health, Department of Medicine, Stanford University, where she is also the Director of Behavioral Health Medical Group Visits. She serves as Site Director for the Internal Medicine Residency program at Stanford. Dr. Juarez-Reyes developed “Beyond Stress,” a six-week group behavioral health intervention for patients with stress, anxiety and depression. Her current research focuses on evaluating behavioral health interventions in primary care and reducing healthcare disparities in Spanish speaking community-based populations. She enjoys travel, walking with friends, anything science fiction and spending time with her family.
