Pediatric Mental Health in Primary Care Settings

September 13, 2023

Course description

We are in the midst of a youth mental health crisis. The rates of anxiety, depression, loneliness and suicide among children and adolescents continue to rise, as the workforce shortage of mental health professionals trained and skilled to deliver care to children and adolescents escalates as well. Because many parts of the country, especially rural areas, experience challenges recruiting child-trained mental healthcare professionals, many young people visit primary care offices in need of assessment, evaluation and treatment for their mental health conditions.

As the shortage of mental healthcare professionals continues to intensify, primary care providers will, inevitably, have to carry out these functions. In this presentation, we will explore some of the pediatric mental health challenges medical professionals face and how to get the necessary support.

Learning objectives

At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the implications of a missed opportunity to treat  pediatric patients
  • Define the black box warning issued by the FDA regarding antidepressants and the risk of suicidality in youth
  • Summarize models through which support to pediatric patients can  be provided

Target audience

Physician and clinician policyholders
