Course description

As populations continue to live longer, the symptoms of cognitive impairment are more commonly being encountered in clinical practice. Additionally, a new drug treatment for Alzheimer’s disease is on the market in the US, with the FDA conditionally approving aducanumab for use in early Alzheimer’s patient populations. Without a diagnosis many people living with dementia may not be able to access new treatment breakthroughs. The advent of improved blood biomarker diagnostic tools, combined with emerging drug treatments, will create a significant increase in demand for diagnosis, which will put extreme pressures on medical practices and healthcare systems. A large percentage of our physician population is unprepared, or underprepared, to meet this increased demand.

A lack of awareness within the medical community, as well as healthcare systems, is hampering efforts to not only diagnose Alzheimer's and other dementias, but also to support people living with dementia. Physicians, other healthcare professionals and healthcare systems alike need to develop dementia care plans that include clinical education around diagnosis and treatment.

Learning objectives

At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Provide an overview of the clinical approach to patients with cognitive symptoms
  • Review the diagnostic process of Alzheimer’s disease and the role of biomarkers
  • Discuss treatment strategies for Alzheimer’s dementia, including recently approved medications
  • Review indications for specialist referral in cases of suspected dementia
