Course Description
The infectious disease landscape is constantly changing. The increased mobility of people, particularly during the summer holidays, means increased risk for exposure to and transmission of infections that might otherwise be rare or unexpected in Illinois. In addition, the emergence of new variants of existing viruses, and corresponding clinical updates regarding best practices in prevention and treatment adds to the difficulty of staying up to date with the latest guidance. “Summer surges” of COVID-19 and recent public health advisories about increasing cases of bird flu among livestock and dengue fever in the US mean that physicians could be seeing patients with symptoms attributable to unexpected causes.
The Illinois State Medical Society invites you to join Emily Landon, M.D., Associate Professor of Medicine and Executive Medical Director, Infection Prevention and Control at the University of Chicago, for an overview of current and emerging public health concerns that physicians should be on the lookout for, including the latest COVID-19 variants, avian flu and dengue fever.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:
- Describe how to incorporate updated COVID-19 guidance into daily practice
- Recognize the risk factors for and understand the epidemiology of High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza (HPAI)
- Identify patients who need testing for dengue fever and understand the changing epidemiology
