Addressing Difficult Situations

Course description

As a healthcare professional, you’ve undoubtedly navigated many potentially tricky situations. While the specifics of these scenarios will depend on your own practice setting and the types of care you provide, one fact remains: it’s essential to be prepared to navigate complex situations of various types.

In this course, we’ll be looking at three areas of medical practice that are key to patient safety, but also have the potential to be difficult if approached without preparation:

  • Informed consent and refusal
  • Dealing with difficult or disruptive patients
  • Caring for minors

Being aware of the key risk management considerations involved in each of these scenarios, as well as the strategies for mitigating these risks, should go a long way toward helping you address these potentially difficult situations.

Learning objectives

At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the key elements of risk that may exist when engaging in complex interactions involving informed consent, disruptive behavior and the provision of care to minors
  • Describe the risk management strategies that can help physicians and clinicians navigate the areas of informed consent, disruptive behavior and the provision of care to minors
  • Recognize these risk management principles and how they could be applied in everyday practice

Target audience

Physician and clinician policyholders
