Course description

To effectively address the opioid addiction and overdose crisis, physicians must be able to identify risk factors for addiction and overdose in their patients and understand the addictive potential of opioid medications. Improved awareness of these factors can lead to better patient outcomes, including reduced rates of addiction and overdose. Ultimately, a deeper understanding of the nature of addiction will support more effective prevention and treatment strategies.

The Illinois State Medical Society invites you to join Stephen D. Loyd, M.D., an original member (still active) of the Treatment of Chronic Pain Guidelines Committee which defined pain treatment for physicians and providers in the state of Tennessee, for a discussion on addiction and overdose risk factors, as well as greater competence in identifying and managing at-risk patients.

Learning objectives

At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe addiction as something other than a moral failure
  • Identify two of the markedly different treatment options in the United States
  • Describe how “systems” overdose death happens and how they are preventable

Target audience

Physician and clinician policyholders
