Course Description

Studies have shown that patients and organizations benefit from having physicians in key leadership positions, yet many doctors don’t know how to apply their existing skills to help manage and lead at the organizational or institutional level.

The Illinois State Medical Society invites you to join Karen Nichols, DO, MA, MACOI, FACP, CS-F, former Dean of the Midwestern University/Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and respected national and international educator on the topics of physician leadership and women leaders in medicine, for a program that presents the concept of “physician leadership” as a series of prime skills that must be considered in order to lead successfully. Leading as a physician in patient care vs. leading as a physician in organizations/health systems will be compared and contrasted. Concepts such as situational leadership, communication styles and emotional intelligence will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how followers’ readiness and situational favorability influence the best leadership style for the situation at hand
  • Describe how the physician’s communication approach in patient care, differs from the physician's communication approach in leadership situations
