Mitigating Patient Risk in the Era of Highly Effective Antiobesity Medications
Course description
According to a KFF poll, about 1 in 8 U.S. adults aged 18 years or older have reported using glucagon-like peptide 1 agonists, otherwise known as GLP-1 medications. Originally developed to treat diabetes, they are now also FDA approved for chronic weight management, increasing their need and popularity among patients. As prescriptions for GLP-1 medications are on the rise, it’s essential for healthcare professionals to understand the risks and side effects of the popular drugs. Join Dr. Sarah Barenbaum, obesity medicine director of the GI Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery practice at Weill Cornell Medical College, for an update on GLP-1 medications for the treatment of obesity. Dr. Barenbaum will provide an informative presentation on what physicians – and patients – should know when prescribing and taking these medications.
Learning objectives
At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:
- Review the mechanisms of the currently approved GLP-1 antiobesity medications and how to describe them to patients
- Discuss the common side effects of GLP-1 antiobesity medications and strategies to mitigate them
- Identify contraindications and more serious side effects of GLP-1 antiobesity medications
- Describe strategies for documenting conversations around GLP-1 antiobesity medications
