From Burning Out to Burning Brightly

Course description

Burnout has become widespread among physicians and has only increased during the COVID pandemic. Physicians are also experiencing moral injury, which is distinct from burnout. Multiple peer reviewed publications have been published regarding the effectiveness of coaching to combat burnout and the need for physicians to develop strategies to focus awareness and support shifts in mindset that can help make healthy changes.

The Illinois State Medical Society invites you to join Elizabeth Chiang, MD PhD, an oculoplastic surgeon at Illinois Eye Center in Peoria and Illinois and certified life coach, for a program that addresses the prevalence and causes of physician burnout, review the difference between burnout and moral injury, and present tools that can help combat burnout.

Learning objectives

At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize common causes of burnout
  • Recognize if they are experiencing burnout or moral injury or both
  • Identify tools to help shift mindset and start to make changes to decrease burnout
  • Identify strategies to visualize their ideal situation with practicing medicine and ways to move toward that ideal by making incremental changes
