Addressing the Elephant in the Room: The Experience of Shame Following Medical Errors
Course description
In this presentation, Duke University School of Medicine’s Will Bynum, MD, will use personal narrative and academic research to explore the psychology of shame, particularly as it relates to the medical profession. Dr. Bynum will provide updates related to the current research on shame in medicine, and the application of these research findings more broadly in healthcare. Lastly, Dr. Bynum will describe strategies for advancing shame resilience within the healthcare profession.
Learning objectives
At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:
- Define the differences between shame and guilt and describe why this distinction matters
- Outline the triggers, contributing factors and effects of shame in healthcare professionals
- Describe the signs of a shame reaction
- List specific strategies for advancing shame resilience in healthcare

Will Bynum, MD
Will Bynum, MD, is an associate professor of family medicine at Duke University School of Medicine and the director of the Duke Family Medicine Residency Program. He is completing his PhD in Health Professions Education at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, where he studies shame experiences across the continuum of medical education. He is the creator of The Shame Conversation, an initiative that utilizes mixed media to advance open communication about the role of shame in healthcare.
