Course description

It is clear, after reaching the grim milestone of 100,000 drug overdose deaths a year during the pandemic, that we have not turned the page on the Opioid Epidemic. Buprenorphine for Opioid Use Disorder is a promising antidote for this public health crisis but remains stigmatized and grossly underutilized. This course examines what happens in the opioid-addicted brain and why buprenorphine is a remarkably effective treatment that can restore normal function and promote the recovery process.

Learning objectives

At the conclusion of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify opioid addiction as a neurobiological disease process and not a matter of simple moral failure
  • Recognize that buprenorphine treatment is a well-established, standard of care for Opioid Use Disorder and any provider with DEA registration can prescribe it
  • Recognize how stigma, often based in unfounded fears of buprenorphine abuse and diversion, undermines treatment access and further perpetuates the opioid epidemic
