Course description

Cases of measles in the first five months of 2019 were higher than the total for any year since 1992, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If this outbreak continues for just a few more months, the United States risks losing the status of a country that has “eliminated” measles.

Learn from the Illinois Department of Public Health’s (IDPH) Chief Medical Officer and State Epidemiologist Jenifer Layden, MD, PhD, about the growing nationwide measles epidemic, as well as how you can work with IDPH to prevent further outbreaks. Dr. Layden will also discuss the latest vaccine recommendations.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this program, learners should be able to:

  • Describe the epidemiologic and demographic aspects of the growing nationwide measles outbreak.
  • Outline the critical role and collaboration needed between Public health and clinical practice in preventing measles outbreaks, and responding to cases.
  • Summarize the most up to date vaccine recommendations for children, adults, and high risk individuals.
